Child Deaths

CHARTS

Child Deaths Ages 1 to 19

MEASUREMENT

Figures for deaths by race1 and infant morality (subtracted from ages birth to 19 data to get the figures for ages 1-19)2 for the state and counties are from the PA Health Department as is the information on causes of death.3

These data was provided by the Bureau of Health Statistics and Research, Pennsylvania Department of Health. The Department specifically disclaims responsibility for any analyses, interpretations or conclusions.

DESCRIPTION

Once children survive the first year of life, mortality drops sharply; however, untimely deaths do occur to children in our community. Reducing preventable child deaths caused by illnesses and both motor vehicle and non-motor vehicle accidents is an easy way to protect our children.

DATA ANALYSIS
  • Although the numbers are small and vary considerably from year to year, Erie County seems to have higher numbers of child deaths compared to other Urban Third Class Counties.
  • Although information on the causes of deaths for infants under one year of age cannot be removed from the totals, the number of deaths caused by accidents were 30 for motor vehicle accidents and 25 for non-motor vehicle accidents.
  • Twenty-four deaths were cause by violent (thirteen suicides and eleven homicides).
