Children With Disabilities
CHARTS
Children with Disabilities by Municipality for 2002MEASUREMENT
Lou Canderosi, of the Erie County Assistance Office, reported total unduplicated recipients (under the age of 18) of disabled children receiving Supplemental Security Income (SSI) related services through the Assistance Office on June 30 for years 1998 through 2002. Population figures are the 100-percent enumeration counts from the STF1 file, tables P12A – P121 of the 2000 Census. The percentage of disabled children is the nimber of disabled children (as identified as receiving SSI related services through the Public Assistance Office) on MA divided by the number of children under age 18 and multiplied by 100.
DESCRIPTION
Children can be determined to be disabled due to physical or mental problems. These problems preclude them from fully experiencing what non-disabled children experience during childhood such as normal play and school experiences. When children are determined to be disabled and are receiving Supplemental Security Income (SSI) through the Social Security Agency, they are eligible to receive medical assistance (MA) through the local Public Assistance Office.
